MARCO ISLAND, Fla, Feb. 28—

Mrs. Jean Ellis Poletti, a former president of the New York State League of Women Voters, a pioneer in what became the United States Committee for UNICEF, and the wife of Charles Poletti, a former Governor of New York, died yesterday in Naples Community Hospital. She lived here since 1966 and spent summers in Elizabethtown, N. Y.

Before her marriage in 1939 to Mr. Poletti, then counsel to Gov Herbert H. Lehman and later Lieutenant Governor and briefly Mr. Lehman's successor in 1942, she had been an advertising executive with Macy's, Best's and Bamberger's Born in Buffalo, daughter of a lawyer, she prepared at Buffalo Seminary for Vassar, from which she graduated in 1925.

Effective Campaigner

Shortly after her marriage, she moved into the gubernatorial mansion in Albany with her husband and became known as an effective Democratic campaigner for President Franklin D Roosevelt, Mr. Lehman and her husband, who had been elected to the State Supreme Court in 1937 and lieutenant‐governor in 1938.

Her husband, who was Governor after Mr. Lehman had resigned to head what became the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. soon entered military service and became a military governor of liberated Italian centers. Mrs. Poletti returned to advertising in the radio department of J. Walter Thompson and served from 1943 to 1945 on the Writers War Board.

In 1948 she headed the women's division in the successful campaign to elect Mr. Lehman to the United States Senate.

Leader In UNICEF

Earlier that year, Mrs Poletti headed the women's division of the United Nations Appeal for Children and remained active with its successor organizations. For 10 years she served as secretary of the United States Committee for UNICEF, on which she held honorary status at her death.

Her term as president of the state League of Women Voters was in 1937‐38. She had also been an alumnae trustee of Vassar, a member of the executive committee of the Girls Clubs of America add a trustee of Town Hall.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, Dr. Charles E. of Boston; two daughters, Mrs. Carla Knox Tidmarsh of Geneva, and Joanna Shattuck Poletti of Boston, and two grandchildren.

There will be a graveside burial service in Elizabethtown this summer.
