GRAYS LABORER FOUND DYING NEAR CORBIN
A search is being conducted in Knox County and vicinity for the person who brutally crushed and surgically mutilated a 45 year old farm laborer and left him to die on a State Highway about 6 miles from Corbin.
William Ova Humfleet, Grays, was found bleeding to death Monday with a crushed chest and jaw and a severe gash in the back of his head.
He died in a hospital there.
The front of his clothing had been cut away and several of his teeth were found on the highway.
State Police said pieces of clothing, blood and tissue were found scattered along the road.
They were sent to Frankfort for laboratory analysis.
MEN BEING QUIZZED
Knox County attorney Carlos Pope said Humfleet was last seen alive Saturday night and that police were questioning the men he was with.
Police said someone possibly threw Humfleet out of a car and ran over him.
They also said a man who identified himself as a tourist stopped his car to notify a family living by the Highway he had seen a body lying in the road.
Humfleet's empty wallet was found in his trousers.

HIGHWAY DEATH OF GRAYS MAN IS MYSTERY AS PROBE CONTINUES
Five People Have Been Called Before Court of Inquiry, But No Arrests Yet Made.
The badly mutilated body of a Grays man, William Ora Humfleet, 45, found hear Gilliam Hill over a week ago still poses a mystery to law enforcing officers, but the search goes on for clues leading to what is described as "possible murder."
According to Knox County attorney Carlos Pope, five people have been questioned, but no arrest had been made, even though some very outstanding clues have been traced to several people connected with the mystery.
Parts of Humfleet's body, it was reported, were found several feet away from the scene, and it was doubted that a car or truck hitting the victim could have done this to the body.
Different people reported seeing Humfleet the night of the occurance, but nobody can cast any definite light upon the real cause for the crime, if such were the case.
Humfleet was taken to a Corbin hospital by Duncan-Vankirk ambulance where he died shortly after arriving.
He did not speak.
Funeral services were conducted at the graveside in the Farris Cemetery with Duncan-Vankirk in charge.

Rest, Ova, rest in peace.
