US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served the State of Nebraska's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1991 until 2001. He studied at Hastings College and received his Real Estate license from the Nebraska Realtors Institute, prior to serving with the United States Navy during the Korean War. Barrett became associated with the political arena and served as the head of efforts in Nebraska to reelect President Ford in 1976. He was elected to the unicameral Nebraska Legislature in 1978 and served as the Speaker from 1987 until 1991. During his tenure in Congress, he the Agriculture Committee and the Education and Workforce Committee. He prioritized efforts for such causes as health care education and rural development.
