Military Leader. Popularly known as Koxinga, he was a Ming loyalist and anti-Qing rebel commander during the Qing Dynasty's conquest of the Ming. He was born in Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, to a Chinese father and a Japanese mother. He studied at Imperial Nanking University, China's principal college during the Ming Dynasty. After the Qing conquest of Beijing in 1644, his father surrendered and his mother died as a result of the Qing army's takeover of Quanzhou, Fujian Province, where his family lived. He assembled troops and took up arms against the Qing, forcing them away from Quanzhou to as far as Nanjing. However, eventually he was overwhelmed by the superior Qing forces. In 1661 he led his troops to Taiwan where he took over the island and expelled the Dutch who had occupied Taiwan for 38 years. He died of Malaria in Taiwan in 1662, and was buried in southern Taiwan, but in 1699 his body was brought by his grandson, with the approval of the Qing government, to Nan'an County in Fujian Province, China, for interment in his ancestral burial grounds at the foot of Mt. Fuchuan, Kangdian Village, Shuitou Township, Nan'an County, Fujian Province. [*Note to Admins: the system forced me to choose a city for the burial site when I submitted this.
