Edward graduated from Griswold College in 1881 and was admitted to the Illinois Bar the following year. From 1885 to 1887, he was Rock Island's city attorney.
In 1884, he married Grace R. Robinson. They had two known children, both daughters, Marian (or Marie) Edna Sweeney and Grace Sarah Sweeney. Both died as children.
He died just after midnight at the Davenport Hospital after an illness of about 7 weeks. The funeral was held from the family home, under the care of Dr. Samuel Van Pelt of the First Methodist Church. Interment was in the Chippiannock Cemetery.
