Saint Beatrice was the daughter of Azzo VI ("Azzolino"), Marchese d'Este, son of Azzo V d'Este and his wife, and Sophie (Eléonore) de Maurienne, daughter of Humbert III, Comte de Maurienne et de Savoie and his third wife Klementia von Zähringen. After her husband-to-be died of his wounds following a battle, young Beatrice devoted herself to the service of God, following the Benedictine rule, at the convent of Sant'Antonio in Polesine, at San Lazzaro just outside Ferrara. In 1221 she moved to a former monastery at the town of Gemmola, in the Euganean Hills. Realizing its potential, she had the monastery restored and equipped for use. She died on May 10, 1226 in Gemmola and was buried in the church of San Giovanni Battista di Gemmola. In 1578, after having been successfully hidden twice from the incursions of the enemies of Este, her body was moved to the church of St. Sophia in Padua. Beatrice's final resting place is the church of Santa Tecla in Este, where she was brought in 1957.
