Howard was born in Yakima, WA March 1, 1926 to Jeannette Frair Prentice and Howard Kelly Prentice, Sr. In the 1920s, Howard, Sr. and several of his siblings ventured west from upstate New York to Yakima. Edward Prentice and his younger brother, Howard, Sr., established Prentice Packing and Cold Storage Company in 1924, which became Howard, Jr.'s lifelong career as well.

Howard was eager to serve his country and enlisted in the Merchant Marines after graduating from Yakima High School in 1944. At the close of World War II, Howard entered the University of Washington where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. The UW was also where Howard met his beloved first wife of 49 years, Doretta M. Carlson. They met on a blind data and, as Doretta often recalled, she returned to her sorority after their first date and proclaimed, "That's the man I'm going to marry." They married on December 28, 1951. Their honeymoon was a train ride to Howard's new assignment, now serving in the Korean War, to Augusta, GA. Following his service with the Merchant Marines, Howard and Doretta returned to Yakima where Howard worked with his uncle managing Prentice Packing and Storage Company.

Howard and Doretta raised three children, taking advantage of the outdoor opportunities of the Yakima Valley and Pacific Northwest. Sunday afternoons picnicking and fishing at Clear Lake and Rimrock Lake are special family memories. In Howard's later years he and Doretta fulfilled their dream of international travel. The time they spent traveling in Africa, Europe, and South America was very special to them.

Following the death of his first wife, Doretta, in 2001, Howard met his second wife Dorothy (Dottie) B. Clowes of Memphis, TN while on an Elderhostel trip to the Southwest United States. Howard and Dottie married in a beach ceremony in Hawaii on February 14, 2004.

Howard was an active member of his community, a longtime member of the Downtown Yakima Rotary Club, First Presbyterian Church (now Grace of Christ), the Yakima YMCA, and the Yakima Country Club, where he often enjoyed 18 holes with his golfing friends. His children fondly recall spending Friday nights with their dad at the "Y Family Night," shooting baskets, swimming, and jumping on the trampoline.

No description of Howard is complete without mentioning his greatest recreational joy: fishing with his friends. Howard and his many close friends explored the waters of Washington, British Columbia, Alaska, and beyond. Howard treasured his lifelong friendships in the Yakima Valley.

Howard is survived by his wife, Dorothy B. Prentice, his three children, Andrea Prentice of Yakima (Charles Chesney), Carol Prentice of Juneau, AK (Robin Walz), and David Prentice of Yakima (Christina Carlson), three grandchildren, Heather Marie Prentice-Walz, Shane William Prentice-Walz, and Mary Jiandie Prentice. In addition, he is remembered fondly by Dottie's children and grandchildren.

Viewing will be held at Keith & Keith Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
