38th Premier of Victoria State. A sheep and cattle farmer who served as a sergeant in the Australian army during World War II, he joined the Liberal Party after the war. He ran for the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1945 and lost but succeeded in being elected in 1947. He became Premier in 1955 and held the office until 1972, becoming the longest serving Premier in Victoria's history, when he resigned in favor of younger leaders. He was knighted in 1966 [GCMG]. The Bolte Bridge in Melbourne's Docklands bears his name.
