Professional Football Player. For ten seasons (1961 to 1970), he played at the defensive end and defensive tackle positions in the American and National Football Leagues with the Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs. Born Gerald Avery Mays, he made his initial mark on the football field during his years at Sunset High School in Dallas, as he achieved All-State honors as a linesman. He continued his athletic excellence on the collegiate level at Southern Methodist University and achieved all-Southwestern Conference honors. Selected by the Texans during the 5th round of the 1961 AFL Draft, he totaled 140 career regular season games. Remarkably, he never missed a game during his ten-year career. He contributed to the Texans' capturing of the AFL Championship in 1962 and following the franchise's relocation to Kansas City, he experienced an AFL Title in 1966, which led to an appearance in the first Super Bowl against the Green Bay Packers in January 1967. Mays was a member of the 1969 Kansas City Chiefs' team which captured Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings in January 1970. During the course of his career he distinguished himself, as he received All Star/Pro-Bowl honors seven-times and First Team-All-Pro status twice. He died following a lengthy battle with cancer.
