William M. D. Roe, LCDR, USN, Retired, of Cokesbury Village, Hockessin, DE formerly of Sudlersville, MD died on October 2, 2016. Bill, as he was known by family and friends, aged 94, was the son of former MD State Senator and US Congressman Dudley George Roe and Anna Metcalfe Roe.

He married Elizabeth Bailey Phillips of Hampton, VA 1944 in Oakland California.

Bill graduated from Sudlersville High School in 1938, McDonough School in 1939 and Washington College in January 1943. At college he belonged to Theta Chi Fraternity and the Varsity Club. In his junior year he defeated all two mile runners from the University of Delaware and from all MD colleges except Navy and the University of MD.

During WWII he served in the Pacific Theater. Later he served on ships of the Atlantic Fleet in the Caribbean, Europe, and the Persian Gulf. He also served at sea on Far Eastern tours, and had shore duty in Virginia, California, Japan and Pennsylvania.

After retirement from the Navy in 1964, he returned to the family home, Roecroft Hall, and worked in the Sudlersville Bank of Maryland for 25 years, retiring as its President in 1989.

Bill was a charter life member of American Legion Post 18, a member of the Queen Anne's County Board of Education for 10 years, serving as President for two years, and also on the Governing Board of Chesapeake College. He was also a member of the Queen Anne's County Historical Society, a Vestryman, Sunday School Superintendent and Treasurer of St. Andrews Episcopal Church Sudlersville, MD until 1985 when he joined the Anglican Church to remain with his traditional faith.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife of 71 years, Libby, in September 2015; also a sister, Anna Elizabeth Roe, brothers Dudley Roe, Jr., and Brown M. Roe and two nephews Dudley G. Roe 3rd, and Brown M. Roe, Jr.

He is survived by his children Jane Roe Fox Babcock (Stover), William M.D. "Bud" Roe, Jr. (Myra), Charles P. "Phil" Roe (Yvonne), six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

In 2007 Bill and Libby moved to Cokesbury Village in Hockessin, DE to be near their daughter, Jane. The family wishes to thank the staff at Cokesbury Village and especially the staff in Health Care, and the staff at VITAS Hospice, for their extraordinary care of Bill.

A memorial service will be held at Cokesbury Village October 22, 2016 at 2:00 PM. Burial will be at Sudlersville Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers please make contributions to the American Legion Post 18, 2619 Centreville Rd, Centreville, MD 21617 in honor of Bill.
