SHIRLEY GORDER

Shirley Halverson Gorder, age 88, former Manitowoc resident, died July 07, 2011, due to complications from a stroke suffered June 23. She was active until the time of her stroke.

Shirley was born June 22, 1923, to Monroe and Sophie Halverson (Hanson) on the family farm located near Cato in Manitowoc County. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Manitowoc in 1941. Following World War II, she enrolled at the University of Wisconsin Madison. She married Lyle Gorder on June 21, 1947, and started a family before completing her education.

Shirley and her family returned to Manitowoc in 1954 where she worked at the University of Wisconsin Manitowoc as administrative secretary to the campus Dean from 1954-1968. In 1968 she returned to college and obtained a Bachelor's Degree in History from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. She taught at Lakeshore Technical College. Beginning in 1977, Shirley worked for Wisconsin Job Service as a Job Placement Specialist in Sheboygan. She transferred to the Manitowoc Office of Wisconsin Job Service where she continued her work as a Job Placement Specialist and became an Adjudicator for employment disputes. She retired in 1988.

Shirley was a leader in local environmental concerns and was a founder of The Lake Michigan Coalition, a local environmental protection group. She was a member of the Manitowoc County Quaker Group and together with them supported local and worldwide environmental efforts and social concern initiatives including Habitat for Humanity. Shirley loved the game of bridge and belonged to two bridge clubs in Manitowoc. She spent much of her time in the out-of-doors hiking, gardening and contemplating nature. She lived in a geodesic dome, one of the first built in North Eastern Wisconsin, in Newton, Manitowoc County, from 1975 - 2004.

Shirley divorced in 1977 and had a special friend Don Taylor during years that followed. In 2005 she moved to Davis, California, to reside with her son, Greg Gorder, and his family until her death. Preceding her stroke she was full of health and had just completed a week vacationing with her son and his family hiking in the out-of-doors she loved so much.

Shirley is survived by her sister, Vera Hagadorn (Halverson) age 91 of Gambrills, Maryland; her son, Greg Gorder and his wife Nancy of Davis, California; her daughter, Barbara Stecker (Gorder) and her husband, Philip of Newton; four grandchildren: Eric Stecker of Portland, Oregon; Karen Hwang (Stecker) of Cincinnati, Ohio; Evan Gorder and Miles Gorder of Davis, California. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Sophia and William Stecker, and Theodore and Penelope Hwang.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe and Sophie Halverson (Hanson); three brothers: Bruce Halverson, Chester Halverson and Gordon Halverson, and two sisters: Dorothy Berg (Halverson) and Edith White (Halverson). She is also preceded in death by special friend Donald Taylor.

At her request a private memorial gathering will be held in Newton, Wisconsin, on September 5, 2011, Labor Day. Local friends and relatives interested in attending should contact her daughter, Barbara Stecker, of Newton, for information.

Shirley spent much of her life contributing to efforts to preserve the environment and improve the conditions of people's lives. The family asks that anyone wishing to make a memorial donation contribute in her name to Manitowoc County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 631, Manitowoc, WI 54221-0631.
