William Lane Harris, Ph.D., 83, husband of Doris Jewell Justus Harris of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2012. The relatives and friends of Dr. William Harris are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Sunday, May 6, 2012 in First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 5, 2012 in J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL from 4:00 until 6:00 pm. Dr. Harris was born on April 13, 1929 in Birmingham, Alabama, son of the late Charles Lawson Harris and Sabra Martin Harris. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, was a History Professor and Dean of Undergraduate Studies at The Citadel. He was also a longtime member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC. He is survived by his wife, Doris Jewell Justus Harris of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughter Barbara Harris June and her husband, Ralph P. June, of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren, Philip M. Ellenberg, Robert Miles Ellenberg and Katherine M. Ellenberg all of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Barbara Smith Randle of Birmingham, AL. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mai Surran Amonette Harris. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to the William L. Harris GE College Bowl Scholarship, c/o The Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie St., Charleston, SC 29409.
