U.S. Congressman from New York. He graduated from Yale College in 1821 and became Professor of Mathematics at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. Two years later he became headmaster of an academy in Baltimore, where he worked for three years. Lord then began to study medicine in Baltimore, received a medical degree from Yale in 1828, and started a medical practice in Sag Harbor, New York. Lord became active in politics, was a Delegate to the 1840 Whig National Convention, and later became a Democrat. In 1846 he moved to Greenport, New York, and became active in the commercial cultivation of fruit trees and trees and shrubs for landscaping. Also in 1846 Lord was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat, and served one term, 1847 to 1849. He did not run for reelection and returned to his Greenport tree farm, Walnut Grove. He ran unsuccessfully for Congress twice, losing races in 1854 and 1856. Lord became a Republican in the late 1850s and was selected as a Delegate to the 1860 Republican National Convention in Chicago. He was taken ill while traveling on the steamship Massachusetts and died en route to Chicago.
