American Journalist, Newscaster and Author. Ifill was an award-winning television journalist and former reporter for The New York Times, who moderated vice-presidential debates in 2004 and 2008. In 1977, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. While at Simmons, she interned for the Boston Herald-American and later worked for the Baltimore Evening Sun (1981–84), The Washington Post (1984–1991), The New York Times (1991–94), and NBC. Later, she became the moderator of the PBS program 'Washington Week in Review', was a senior correspondent for 'PBS NewsHour' and appeared on various news shows, including 'Meet the Press'. In August 2013, Ifill and Judy Woodruff were named co-anchors and co-managing editors of 'PBS NewsHour'. On October 5, 2004, she moderated the vice-presidential debate between Republican Vice President Dick Cheney and Democratic candidate John Edwards, and on October 2, 2008, she moderated the vice-presidential debate between Democratic Senator Joe Biden and Republican Governor Sarah Palin. Ifill's published works include 2009's 'The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama'. On August 10, 2016, Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism announced that Ifill was the recipient of the 2016 John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism. Ifill, who also served on the board of the Harvard Institute of Politics, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Museum of Television and Radio, and the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism, died in hospice care of cancer.
