William Glasscock Dies At Age 106

William Henry Glasscock was born in 1873, the year that Leo Tolstoy finished his classic novel, Anna Karenina; Emperor Napoleon 111 of France died at age 64, and Philo Remington started producing a new gadget called a typewriter.

Mr. Glasscock, 106, believed by his family to be the oldest person in the county, died Thursday, December 13, 1979.

William Glasscock, a native of Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri had attributed his longevity to "lots of hard work" and abstinence from liquor. A former railroad freight conductor, Mr. Glasscock kept active by taking long walks and working in his yard until last year when he broke his hip.

Following that accident, he was confined to a National City convalescent hospital.

"The quality of life there wasn't really very good, and he went down hill fast," said Gary Brent, Mr. Glasscock's nephew.

Mr. Glasscock in an interview last year recalled that on his first visit here in 1919 he found "practically no town."

When he celebrated his 100th birthday, he received congratulatory telegrams from Governor Ronald Reagan and President Richard Nixon.

The pastor at the North Park Community Advent Christian Church, where Mr. Glasscock was a member, said the centenarian was a "faithful, steady type of person who gave direction to the community."

Brent said that he and other family members said that they believed Mr. Glasscock to be the oldest county resident "because we've never heard of anyone older." And a spokesman for the San Diego Historical Society said that the society has evidence that he was the oldest county resident.

Survivors include Mr. Glascock's son, Albert, 74, and a sister, Ivy Link, 83, both of North Park. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 17, 1979 at 2:00 PM at Lewis Colonial-Benbough Mortuary.
