Television Master of Ceremonies and journalist. He was principally known as host of the long-running BBC Television quiz "Mastermind" from 1972 to 1997. He was born in Iceland but travelled to Edinburgh, Scotland where he lived for most of his life, never taking British Citizenship. He studied at Jesus College, Oxford before pursuing a career in journalism. He joined the Scottish Daily Express newspaper as a reporter moving on to the BBC, presenting television progammes on history and archaeology. In 1972 he began his long affliation with "Mastermind." He most famous catch-phase being "I've started so I'll finish."
