Dorothy Anne Oslin, 87, passed from this life on December 3, 2016, surrounded by those who loved her. She was born Dorothy Anne Laurie in Detroit, Mich. on December 23, 1928, the only child of Hazel and Hillery Emmett Laurie.

Dorothy grew up in the Port Huron, Mich. area where she graduated from high school and where she learned to love the water, watching ships pass on Lake Huron. She studied both voice and piano, and even as a teen, was a well know vocalist in her home town, singing at musicals and local events. She then went on to Philadelphia College of the Bible.

She married Frank Andrew Oslin on November 24, 1949, and began the busy life of a pastor’s wife. (They divorced in 2004.) They had five children: Joy (late John) Nelson of Black Earth, WI; Ruth (Terry) Eggum of Silver Bay, Minn.; Eric (Lela) Oslin of St. Paul, Minn.; Dawn (late Alan) Geisler and Laurie (Ken) Bauer, both of Madison, WI. They survive her as well as grandchildren: Drew, Amy, Dan, Rachel, Leslie, Leah, Amber, Annie and Stephen;and seven great-grandchildren: Elliot, Joy, Addy, Cora, Lawrence, Jack and Grace.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Sarah; many friends and her dog companion, Poncho.

In 1970, Dorothy moved to Marinette with her family, and came to see it as her hometown. She lived here proudly on her own until 2013, when she relocated to Madison, WI to live with her daughter Dawn. She loved Marinette, and the water that surrounded it. She relished drives through Henes Park and parking by the water where she could watch the seagulls, hear their cries, and the water lapping at the shore.
She was active at Bethel Baptist Church in Marinette, where she was the Pastor’s wife for 15 years. She developed close friendships there where she sang, played the piano, created Christmas Programs, taught Sunday School, and participated in the women’s ministry group, King’s Daughters. She was also an aspiring writer and had several articles published as well as a children’s book, which gave her a listing in the Library of Congress as an author. Dorothy was a survivor who fought through many challenges in her life.

She survived a burst appendix in 1997, and a serious car accident in 2009, both which might have killed her. She courageously spent time in counseling in her 60’s, intent on growing as a person and resolving issues from her past. Those who knew Dorothy will remember her love of children and animals (especially cats), Christmas lights (if other people set them up) and her laugh and quick sense of humor.
As her granddaughter, Leslie wrote: “Goodbye to the sassy, spunky, spirited and fun woman who nurtured and inspired me. You are the reason I still buy orange tic tacs, the reason I drink banana milkshakes in Ethiopia and Sudan. You are part of the reason I try to soar through life. I love you and will miss you everyday. Goodbye Grandma.”

Friends may call at Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home in Marinette on Thursday, December 8, 2016, from 6 until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, December 9th at 11 a.m. with Pastor Travis Albrecht officiating.
