Danish King. He was a son of King Waldemar II of Denmark and Queen Berengária and became king after King Eric IV Plowpenny and King Abel of Denmark who were his brothers. He was chosen as king when Abel died in 1252 and was crowned at Lund Cathedral. His efforts to have King Eric canonized and the assassination of King Eric blamed on King Abel dominated hos reign. He made peace with Norway and Sweden after animosity caused by the previous Danish king. His reign was very turbulent and culminated in his having the archbishop ridiculed and then imprisoned. There was a legend about him being assassinated with poison.
