Courtney was the son of Robert Forsyth and Teressa Underwood. About 1899 he married his first wife, Nora. They had no children and were divorced in 1903. On 30 Jan 1906 he married Emma Fowler. At a later date he married his third wife, Nora Gray Cantrell. He was involved in the horseracing industry both as an owner and trainer. Courtney died of a ruptured gall bladder at Louisville City Hospital at the age of 67.
