The one thing that brought me to contact you. I was looking for information on William Lewis Carpenter (1833 - 1899) And I found your Find-a-Grave Bio. I also manage some graves on Find-a-Grave.

A few years back I became acquainted with a lady by the name of Jane Loy Ries, she lives in Effingham, Illinois. At the time I had a website and she saw that I had Carpenter's from New Hope, Alabama.

This is a copy of an e-mail I received from Jane.

Dear Louise, December 2002

I have your site bookmarked because of my connection to New Hope, Madison Co.

My Loy and Wiley family both came from Madison Co. The Loy's left in 1829 for Illinois and the Wiley's left in 1863 for Illinois. A cousin just discovered that our g-g-grandfather's sister moved to Illinois after her husband, Lewis Carpenter died in 1899.

We did not know of her existence until my cousin found her obituary on microfilm for 1904 in Effingham, IL. Her brother was James Wiley (my g-g-grandpa) and they were both born in Madison Co. to William J. Wiley and Elizabeth (Betsy) Webster. Eliza Ann Wiley was married to Lewis Carpenter in 1856 and he died in the autumn of 1899. They lived in Alabama and Tennessee.

We were excited about making this discovery so imagine my excitement over finding this new addition to your site on the Carpenter family. If you would like a copy of the obituary, please let me know. As soon as my cousin sends it to me, I'll send you a copy. My g-grandma, Linda Wiley Loy, wrote a book called Memories of the Sunny South 1861-1862-1863 detailing their life in Madison Co, during the Civil War and the decision her father (James) made to move the family north in 1863.

Lewis and Eliza Carpenter would have been her aunt and uncle. I could make you a copy of it too if you are interested. You have a very interesting site and I've always enjoyed checking it. Happy New Year!

Jane Loy Ries

It's not much but it is a nugget as to what happen to Lewis Carpenter's wife after he passed away. I though you might be interested in her letter.

If she did send me the obit I will have to search it out.
