Dorothy Kathryn Dyche Bretschneider
January 9, 1925 – December 4, 2016
Resident of San Jose

Dorothy Bretschneider passed from this life on December 4th, 2016. She went peacefully, surrounded by her family and their love.

Dotty, as she was known to friends and family, was born on January 9, 1925, in her grandmother's house on Homestead Road in Santa Clara, CA. Her parents, Justin Kimber Dyche and Wilma Dorothy Sherman Dyche, later moved to Watsonville where Dotty grew up.

She attended San Jose State College where she majored in home economics, and later secured a teaching position in Lower Lake, CA. Unfortunately, an automobile accident and recovery ended that career. She worked for TWA as a stewardess for five years.

During that time, she met and married Richard Eldon Bretschneider, recently discharged from the Navy, in Los Angeles, CA. After the births of three sons in Los Angeles, she and Richard moved to San Jose in 1964, and called it home for the rest of their lives.

Dotty's life was defined by family, her beliefs, and charity. She regularly attended the United Methodist Church, in Willow Glen, Campbell, and Almaden, having enjoyed fellowship in each. She was a member and often leader in the philanthropic sisterhood of PEO International. Along with Richard, Dotty worked for many years at the Santa Clara County Fair, where she managed the Agriculture/Horticulture exhibits building, as well as occasionally contributing her garden's fruits and vegetables and her sewing in competitions. A love of San Jose and the valley led them both to volunteer at the San Jose Historical Museum for many years.

Dotty lost Richard in 2009, and a few years later retired to the Brookdale Senior Living in San Jose, CA.

Dorothy was extremely proud of her family. She is survived by sons Richard, Ronald and William, and their families including five grandchildren, Justin, Michelle, Lane, Carly, and Neil. All will miss her dearly.

A memorial will be held on January 7th at 2:00 p.m. at the Campbell United Methodist Church, 1675 Winchester Blvd, Campbell, CA.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Cottey College: http://www.cottey.edu/give
