54th Governor of Rhode Island. A member of the Democratic Party, he served in this position for one term, from January 1923 until January 1925. The son of a police officer, after graduating from the College of Holy Cross at Worcester, Massachusetts in 1907 and Georgetown University Law School, Washington DC in 1910, he was admitted to the bar and opened a law practice in his home town. In 1912 he entered politics when he ran for and was elected to the Rhode Island Legislature, serving until 1923. In 1922 he was nominated on the Democratic ticket for Governor, defeating the Republican nominee Harold J. Gross by a slim margin. He declined to run for a second term in 1924, choosing instead to run for the US Senate and lost to Republican challenger Jesse H. Metcalf. Following his defeat, he returned to his law practice but remained active in local politics. He died from heart failure at the age of 80.
