Camp was a son of Amos and Euphemia McClelland Camp, representatives of two of the pioneer families of Springfield, and was related through his mother to General Shields and to former Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks. He was born in Springfield, June 21, 1845. At the age of 18 he enlisted as a soldier in the Civil war and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. On March 9, 1873, he married Miss Amelia Helmle, daughter of the late William and Elise Helmle, and shortly afterward removed to Chicago where for many years he was connected with the United States post office.
