YAKIMA - Thomas Urvina, 64, of Moxee, WA, died Thursday May 17, 2012 in Yakima, WA.

Tom was born December 21, 1947 in Torrington, WY to Louis and Cipriana (Vasquez) Urvina. He was raised and educated in the Yakima Valley. As a youngster, he helped his family work the fields, and enjoyed going to dances with his friends and siblings. Tom enjoyed being the youngest boy of his 13 siblings, and enjoyed playing basketball and boxing. In his later years, he was the Raiders' #1 fan. Like many, he was proud to serve in U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era from1969 to 1971, but his life was forever changed.

In 1966, his son Demetrius was born in Nampa, ID. Soon after, he met his true love, Diane and they were married at the home of his parents in Yakima on Sept. 28, 1974. Tom and Diane moved to California, where they raised their two daughters, Angela and Kylene before returning home to Yakima in 1992. Tom spent the last 20 years enjoying true family time with his large family. Tom was a father figure to all his daughter's friends, including Tawnya Contreras, Robert Pettie and Mandy Vijarro. He opened his home and heart to all his children's friends and was a surrogate father and grandfather to many. No one was a stranger to Tom. In retirement he enjoyed travels with his wife and many unknown travels as a world-class hitch hiker. He left us with endless laughable moments. Our dad didn't live in the past or the future, but he lived in the moment. His proudest accomplishment was being a grandpa.

Tom is survived by his wife, Diane (Jones) Urvina; sons, Demetrius T. Menchaca (Heather) and Luciano J. Urvina; daughters, Angela Palomares (Lencho) and Kylene Urvina; sisters, Lupe Reyes, Mercedes (Bernardo) Trevino, Rosie Reyes, Rayes (Frank) Flores, Mary (Jerry) Dutton, Ricarda (Fred) Valenzuela, Lucy (Jose Luis) Flores, Julia (Paul) Reboca, Esther (Frank) Bastardo, and Lydia Urvina; grandchildren, Nathaniel, Katrina, Demetrius, Anthony & Nicolas Menchaca, Mykel, Gabriella, Elizabeth, and Lilyana Palomares; and great grandson, Marcus Menchaca. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis & Cipriana Urvina, three brothers, Evaristo Urvina, Silverio Urvina, and Louis Urvina, Jr., his sister, Frances Urvina, and a special nephew, Cirilo Reyes.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2012 at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home, with a Vigil to be held at 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 24th at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Terrace Heights Memorial Park.
