Obituary ...

Victoria- Anita Rhae Moore, 86, of Port Lavaca, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2017. She was born in Alpine, Texas, on August 2, 1930 to the late Mary Willie Eason, of Lindale, Texas, and the late John Harrison Banks, of Austin.

In 1947 after graduating from Lindale High School she entered Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. On Christmas Day in 1948 she married the love of her life James Edward Moore of Lindale, and spent the next 60 years together in love until his death in October 2009. After marriage she transferred to Commerce, Texas where the couple attended East Texas State University in Commerce and they completed their Bachelor’s Degree in Education at the University of Houston. Anita earned her Master’s Degree in Education in 1953 with a major in elementary education.

She began that teaching career in 1951 in Port Lavaca, Texas where she taught at the elementary level. She also taught school in Corpus Christi in the Sundeen ISD from 1953 – 1956 and then in the Llano ISD from 1956 – 1960. In 1960 Anita and Jim returned to Port Lavaca and Calhoun County ISD where she taught in levels from pre-kindergarten to high school in a career that spanned 39 years in CCISD. In 1991 Anita retired from CCISD and tutored 7 accelerated students for a year, and in 1992 she went back to what she loved to do by joining the faculty of Victoria Christian School in Victoria, Texas and teaching 5th grade until 2007 giving her a 56 year teaching career.

Anita was a member of Texas Retired Teachers Association, was an officer in the Texas State Teachers Association, and a life member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, where she served in the Epsilon Pi Chapter as an officer of several offices including chapter president. In 1996 – 1997 she was awarded Victoria Christian School’s “Teacher of the Year” award, and in 2005 Anita was celebrated for being named as “Teacher of the Year” by the Texas Christian Schools Association of Texas and her 50th year of teaching. As a teacher she was not only loved by her students through the years, but she also remembered every student she ever taught, teaching 3 or 4 generations in many local families.

Anita and Jim were members of the Church of Christ and they worked diligently for the Lord and their church. Anita not only taught Sunday school but also Vacation Bible School during the summers both locally and in other communities and states. She also served at a counselor at Peach Valley Christian Youth Camp during several summers and also went on a mission trip to Romania to help instruct English and the Bible with members of the church there. Anita was a person who visited those who were sick, or homebound, or grieving and she always was one of the first to reach out and help in whatever capacity was needed.

She loved to travel and would take her family to almost every state in the United States and every part of Texas. In her later years she broadened that love by traveling the world and visited many countries including Canada, Australia, England, Scotland, Rome, Egypt, Greece, Istanbul, Israel, Whales, South America and the Panama Canal, Romania, St. Petersburg Russia, Hawaii, and the Mediterranean.

Anita was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, James Edward Moore; her parents; and 3 brother in laws, Charles Hauk, of Tyler; Ray Brown, of Wolfe City; Gary Moore, Red Oak, Texas.

She is survived by her daughters Sheryl Lynn Moore Cuellar and husband Jay Cuellar of Port Lavaca, Texas; Michon Moore Hemenway and husband Thomas Hemenway of Newburgh, Indiana; and Lina Moore and husband Michael Hawes of Port Lavaca, Texas; two sisters, Mary Ann Kinzie and husband Dr. Bill Kinzie of Ennis, Texas; Lina Hauk of Tyler, Texas; one brother, John Harrison Banks Jr. and wife Karen Irene Banks of Bellaire, Texas; 2 sister in laws Arvalene Brown of Wolfe City, Texas, and Arlene Hall and husband Ross Hall of Lindale, Texas; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
