Without warning, she was shot in the head from two blocks away by a man wielding a high powered rifle. The suspect, who was well known to the Bonner Springs PD, was apprehended, but was not tried for the murder of Officer Murphy because he hanged himself in his jail cell six days later. Officer Murphy is memorialized at Panel 37-E:5 on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.
