US Secretary of Labor, US Ambassador to Japan. He was appointed by President Richard M. Nixon as the 12th US Secretary of Labor, serving from July 1970 until February 1973 and appointed by President Gerald R. Ford as US Ambassador to Japan, serving from July 1974 until February 1977. Following his ambassador post in 1977, he became Chairman of the Board of the Uranium Mining Company and served as an adjunct professor at University of California in Los Angeles. He died at the age of 96, just five days shy of his 97th birthday.
