Nobel Prize Recipient. He received the 1901 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for developing a diphtheria antitoxin. Born in Hansdorf, Prussia (now Lawice, Poland), he studied medicine at the Academy for Military Doctors at the Royal Medical-Surgical Friedrich-Wilhelm-Institute in Berlin. After completing ten years of military service as a troop doctor, he began working at the Hygiene Institute of Berlin under Robert Koch, one of the pioneers of bacteriology. The first successful treatment of a child with Behring's therapeutic diphtheria serum occurred in 1891. Behring also collaborated with the Japanese bacteriologist Kitasato Shibasaburo on a tetanus antitoxin. In 1895, he was appointed a professor of hygiene at the University of Marburg, a position he held for the rest of his life.
