Revolutionary War Continental Army Major General, US Congressman. Born in New Britain, Connecticut, he graduated Yale College in 1762. In 1774 he moved to Lenox, Massachusetts and there in 1775, after the outbreak of the Revoluntionary War, he raised a regiment and, as its Colonel, crossed the Delaware River with General George Washington on December 25, 1776. Promoted to Brigadier General on February 21, 1777, he would be adavanced to Major General six years later. In 1790 he removed to Lisle, New York and was elected to represent New York in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1803 to 1805. He died in Lisle on 1808, and his remains were interred alongside his wife in the Lenox Churchyard.
