E. Ray Roberts passed away at the age of 82 in Ocala, FL on December 17, 2006, after a brief illness. He was born in Clarksville, TN on January 11, 1924, to Ernest Ray, Sr. and Genevieve Roberts. He moved to Stuart in 1962 and lived here until 1996 when he moved to Monticello, FL.

He was a distinguished veteran of World War II as a Sergeant in the Marine Corp involved in the Saipan Island Operation, Battle for and, the capture of Iwo Jima Island, participated in the assault and occupation of Okinawa (Feb 1943 - Oct 1945). Finished his Bachelors's degree at Florence State Florence, AL, and reenlisted in the Army as an officer 1st Lieutenant Korean Conflict (Jun 1951 - Jun 1954).

He was a teacher/school bus driver at Fairhope AL High school (Chemistry, Maths & English) 1954-1956. Attended the UGA 1956-1958 earning a Masters's degree in chemistry. Selected to attend Oakridge Institute of Nuclear studies 1958-1959, teaching special courses throughout the state of Alabama. He taught chemistry and physics at Foley High Foley, AL, 1960-1961. Martin County High school teaching chemistry and physics from 1962 and later went into the administration for the Martin County School system. He retired in 1988.

He was an early supporter and board member for many years with the Florida Oceanographic Society in Stuart, FL.

After retirement he traveled to France, studying the language and traveled abroad.

He had many hobbies some of which were lapidary, raising cattle. A love of blacksmithing and knife-making which drew him up to the Monticello area and becoming his home for over ten years. He made many friends there and at the Thomasville YMCA while continuing his love of teaching and learning blacksmithing.

He was not only a teacher but a student of the world around him.

He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by us all.

He leaves behind three sons, E. Ray Roberts, III and his wife Kay, Sean Roberts, and his wife Lori, Curtis Roberts, and a daughter Yvonne Gail. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Bill Roberts, Samantha Roberts, Ernest Ray (Rob) Roberts, IV, Leigh Roberts Hutson, David Roberts, Christopher Roberts, and Jay Wallace. There are also seven great-grandchildren.

Come celebrate and share his life with us on January 27, 2007, at Palm City Presbyterian Church at 4:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the Florida Oceanographic Society or a charity of your choice.

His final resting place will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. on April 27, 2007.
