He was the recipient of the Sullivan Award in 1947 as the United State's outstanding amateur athlete. He represented the United States on four Olympic Rowing teams (1948, 1952, 1956 and 1960). He won a bronze medal in in 1956 at the Melbourne Australia Olympics. He was the president of the United States Olympic Committee at the time of his death. He married twice. The first time was to Mary Gray Freeman in 1954 (the 1951 US national women's champion in swimming and a member of the United States swim team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. They had one son and five daughters. The couple separated in 1969 and divorced in 1980. He married Sandra Lee Worley in 1981. They had no children. They remained married until Kelly’s death in 1985.
