Civil Rights Figure. On February 1, 1960 Richmond and three other African-American young men sat down at a segregated cafeteria counter at the Woolworth's store in Greensboro, North Carolina. The four were refused service at the time, but their act led to the "Greensboro Sit-Ins", a series of protest demonstrations that eventually brought about the integration of the cafeteria counters. Richmond was a native of Greensboro. He graduated from Dudley High School and then attended the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, but dropped out before graduation. Afterwards Richmond moved to Franklin before returning home to take care of his parents. In 1980 the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce awarded Richmond the Levi Coffin Award. Following his death in 1990, the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University awarded Richmond an honorary doctorate.
