Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 4th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 9th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. During his service he served as acting Military Governor of Kentucky, and as commander of the 23th Brigade of the Army of the Cumberland. In June 1862, he was promoted to Brigadier General. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
