US Congressman. A member of a prominent Long Island family that intermarried with the equally prominent Platt family, he graduated from Princeton in 1764, studied law, and began practice in Plattsburgh. One of Clinton County's first white settlers, he was a Delegate to New York's Provincial Congress from 1774 to 1775, and a Delegate to the State Constitutional Convention from 1776 to 1777. Relocating to Long Island, Tredwell was a member of the New York Assembly from 1777 to 1783, and Judge of the Suffolk County Probate Court from 1778 to 1787. He served in the New York Senate from 1786 to 1789 and was Suffolk County Surrogate Court Judge from 1787 to 1791. In 1791 Tredwell was elected to the US House of Representatives to fill the vacancy caused by James Townsend's death. He was reelected to a full term in 1792 and served from May 1791 to March 1795. A committed Anti-Federalist, he played an important role in the incorporation of the Bill of Rights into the US Constitution. Tredwell returned to Plattsburgh in the late 1790s. He was a Delegate to the 1801 New York constitutional convention, and served again in the New York Senate from 1803 to 1807. From 1807 until his death he served as Clinton County Surrogate Judge. His name is sometimes spelled "Treadwell".
