Born Mary Mills, she had her name changed as a child to Mary Mackay after her parents married. Her professional name was Marie Corelli. She received her education in a private Catholic school in France. After she pursued a musical career, playing harp and mandolin, she began to write. Her novels include "Barrabas" in 1893 and "The Sorrows of Satan" in 1893. After being publicly known that the Royal family enjoyed her books, she became a bestseller. Writing on Christianity and the mystic, her books were a part of the foundation of today's esoteric philosophy. Corelli's eccentricity became well known as well as the ever-changing story of her parentage and age. In her later years, she worked to preserve the historical buildings of Stratford-upon-Avon. She shares her grave plot with Bertha Vyver, her father's long-time nurse and then her companion. She left her estate to Vyver.

Inscription

Teach me, O God, the way to heights supernal, show me all vain worldly trammels, set me fee, and lift me ever nearer unto thee. Fill thou my soul with some supreme endeavor, some vast untiring quest to last forever. Let all but they commandments cease to be, -I shall have found all thing in finding thee.
