Madeline and Louie always longed for another child. Later in her life, in her early 40's, she was blessed with a daughter, Diana Lynne. She adored her daughter so much but she always had plenty of love to go around. Her son gave her 5 grandchildren, 3 girls and 2 boys, all stair steps in age begining with Diana.
In 1968 her beloved daughter Diana was diagnosed with brain cancer. Madeline was devistated at her death and never really recovered. She remained in Elmhurst with the love of her life, Louie. Madeline loved all dogs, her birds and squirels. From my knowledge, she had 2 dogs in Elmhurst, Rusty some type of hound and her beloved Pepper, a mastiff mix. She took care of her dogs just as she did her children. She invented her own dog language and her dogs understood everything she said. I am not sure when Rusty died but I do know that Pepper lived to be almost 20 years old. She didn't have the heart to put him down and cared for him in his crippled old age until he just faded away. Another death, another devistation. Her beloved Louie was diagnosed with Alzhimers and later kidney cancer. He passed away leaving her behind once again in 1991. Her son Lauren moved back to Elmhurst to live with her as a companion. As she progressed in age, Lauren took on the roll as her care giver. Madeline was a breast cancer survivor. First diagnosed in 1996, with surgery she beat the cancer. Her memory began to fade after the surgery but she still wanted to live at her home. As the years went by and her memory was robbed from her, there was only 4 people whom she new and could call by name. Her Louie, the love of her life, son Lauren, daughter Diana and her beloved dog Pepper.
Madeline died peacefully in her sleep at her home just the way she wanted. She was 89 years young. I still think of her often and love her very much. Each and everytime I talk to my dogs in her language I have to smile and thank her for all her gifts.
