Mr. Shell died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at the Willamette Valley Medical Center. He was 86.
Born April 17, 1920, in Omaha, he was the son of Frank Lorenzo and Claudia (Shawler) Shell.
He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, and was on his way west to Hawaii when World War II broke out. He eventually ended up assembling and repairing P-40 fighters in Upper Assam, India.
He returned to the U.S. to finish his Air Corps commitment in Idaho, and married the former Lavona Louise Emmons on Oct. 14, 1945, in Boise.
He proceeded to earn a degree in architectural engineering at Washington State University in Pullman. Upon graduating in 1949, he moved his family to Portland and opened his own architectural firm.
Mr. Shell's architectural legacy includes many churches, schools and homes. Besides architecture, he had three passions in life: fly fishing, watercolor painting and car appreciation, particularly when it came to BMWs.
"He was a man of talent and opinion," his family said. "His presence will be missed."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Nickie and Darey, both of Yamhill, and Trisha Montemayor of Seattle, along with nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Loaves and Fishes, in care of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, 135 N.E. Evans St., McMinnville, OR 97128.
