Dancer. Born in Norwich, Norfolk, England, together with his wife Irene Castle, they became one of the most popular ballroom dance teams of the early 20th century. They gained worldwide popularity for their graceful style and introducing such dances as the one-step, fox-trot, turkey trot, castle polka, castle walk and hesitation waltz. He enlisted in the British Royal Flying Corps during World War I, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre after 300 combat missions, and after shooting down two enemy planes. He was killed in a plane crash near Fort Worth, Texas, while assigned to train American pilots. After his death, Irene Castle retired from dancing.
