There was a small stream running behind the Bill Jenkins's home on the Lorane Hwy, Oregon. Bill and Stella Jenkins's son, Don and Hubert "Hub" were best friends.
In late afternoons, Hub, Don and I would relax on the old lawn furniture beside that stream, drinking beer and soda's and talking, laughing and just being friends.
We talked many evenings about what we wanted from life and how we would go about getting it. Hub never mentioned going into the military, however he never wanted to be a logger or work in the mills either, that was pretty much what all the young men did, his buddy Don was a logger, as was Don's dad.
It was a surprise to us all when he joined the military but understandable as Hub's dad was a military man I recall.

Hub and Don taught me how to drive in Don's little 57 T-Bird. He loved that car, more then anything.
Hub drove a big tank of a car, not sure what it was, but big enough to run over a smaller car, and that is almost what he did one dark stormy night on the Loraine highway.
Hub was following Don and I and he lost control and run into the back of the T-Bird, it was not a pretty sight, but Don and Hub laughed about it after the car was repaired

I lost track of Don and Hub after I married, I think of Hub often and wonder what his life would have been if he had never left. I feel a deep sadness knowing he died alone in a strange hostile county back then.
"Thank You Hub for being the brave one".
