Prosper Crary was born in Madison Co., New York, August 30, 1824. His mother died when he was seven years old and he came to live with his cousin in Jackson Co., Mich. At the age of 27 he married Mahala Cummins and to them was born one son who died at the age of three years. Mr. Crary was an early pioneer of Gratiot county, where he resided until his death, Feb. 11, 1915, at the age of 90 days, 5 months and 12 days. He enlisted in Co. F. 13th Michigan
Infantry on the 2nd day of September, 1864 and served about ten months when he was honorably discharged on account of disability caused from a wound.
