Congressman. Born in Jackson Parish, Louisiana and the son of David Warren and Sarah Jane (Pyburn) Dies. Martin attended public school in Texas, and acquired his law degree at the law department of the University of Texas at Austin and was admitted to the bar in 1893, practicing in Woodville, Texas. He edited a newspaper in Freestone County and served as county marshall. He was elected county judge of Tyler County in 1894. He used his legal offices to secure land titles in the East Texas timber region until he moved south to Beaumont in 1897. During the Spanish-American War he joined the Beaumont Light Guards, which became Company D, Third Regiment, of the Texas Volunteers. After his return he was elected district attorney of the First Judicial District in 1898. He was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-first and to the four succeeding Congresses March, 1909 to March, 1919. He served as chairman of the Committee on Railways and Canals on Sixty-third and Sixty-fourth Congresses. In May of 1892 he married Olive Cline Blackshear together they had three children. Martin retired in 1918 to his ranch on Turkey Creek, Tyler County, Texas. He moved to Kerrville, Texas, in 1921 and died there at the age of 52.
