Julia was the daughter of Samuel Appleton and Julia Webster. Her grandfather was Daniel Webster. On April 12, 1871 she was married to Walker Keith Armistead of Virginia, son of Gen. Lewis A. Armistead, C.S.A., in New York City's Trinity Chapel. They had three sons, Lewis Addison, Walker Keith and Daniel Webster. The family lived in New York and New Jersey before settling in Newport, Rhode Island in 1882.
