Death: Jul. 7, 1959

US Navy Admiral. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1897 and served in Cuba and the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. During the Boxer Rebellion he served with the Asiatic Squadron. He graduated from the Naval War College in 1915. During World War I he served on the staff of Admiral William Sims and commanded the gunboat USS Nashville in the Mediterranean, receiving the Navy Cross. He attained the rank of Rear Admiral in 1928 as Chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering. In 1936 he was promoted to Admiral as commander of the Asiatic Fleet. In the 1930s Yarnell pioneered aircraft carrier tactics during the Problem 13 exercise, demonstrating Hawaii's vulnerability with maneuvers similar to the ones Japan used in the December, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Yarnell retired in 1939 but was recalled for World War II, serving as an advisor to the Chinese Military Mission. He retired again in January 1943, but was recalled in June, serving as a Special Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations until retiring permanently in December, 1944. The USS Harry E. Yarnell, a guided missile cruiser that was in service from 1963 to 1993, was named in his honor. (bio by: Bill McKern)
