Poet. João de Deus Ramos was born in São Bartolomeu de Messines in the province of Algarve. He completed his baccalaureat in law at the University of Coimbra in 1859. A unanimously popular figure of his age, he was honored at national level in 1895 one year before his death. Although he worked as a journalist, he is still remembered more as a great lyrical poet and the teacher who perfected a method of teaching reading that was published as "Cartilha Maternal" in 1876. It was an immediate success both in Portugal and Brazil and it was mantained ever since. Poet Antero de Quental hailed João de Deus as the most original poet of his age. The main characteristic of his work, brought together in "Campo de Flores", 1893, are the deliberately direct and naïve lyricism used to explore traditional poetic themes and the virtuosy of his meter and hrymes, which introduced an highly individual musicality. He died in Lisbon, and his remains were translated from the Jeronimos Monastery to the National Pantheon on December 1st, 1966.
