US Congressman and Jurist. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1776 and served in the Revolutionary War as a Major on the staff of General William Whipple, losing a leg at the 1778 battle of Butts (Quaker) Hill, Rhode Island. After being wounded he returned home, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and began a practice in Portsmouth. From 1790 to 1793 he was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, and served as Speaker. In 1792 Sherburne was elected to the US House of Representatives as an anti-Federalist and served two terms, 1793 to 1797. In 1801 he was appointed US Attorney for New Hampshire, an office he held until 1804, when he was appointed New Hampshire's US District Court Judge. He served on the bench until his death. Sherburne was the brother in law of US Senator and Governor John Langdon.
