Erwin joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 14 and sailed with the Alaska Steamship to Alaska for 35 years. He also was on tugs that sailed between Seattle and Alaska for 5 years and a highrigger on dams. Erwin's father was James C. Nelson who was born in 1876 in Denmark.
