The private secretary to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Before the Civil War he graduated from Yale University and was an associate professor at the University of Mississippi. After the War he was imprisoned at Fort Delaware, where he resumed his study of law. Released in 1866, he settled in New York City and married writer Constance Cary. He became the secretary and counsel of New York City's Rapid Transit Commission. He declined President Grover Cleveland's offers of appointments as Assistant Secretary of State and ambassador to Italy.
