John and Jane (nee Charlton) McArthur were distraught when they lost their infant son John in 1874. From grand -daughter Virginia Young (MacLachlan), we know that this couple very much wanted a boy named after the father. In 1877 sadness turned to joy when they had another son and named him JOHN HENRY. Tragically, they lost him, too. The couple never had another child named John.


Public Ledger November 9, 1878, page 2:

McARTHUR. - On the 7th instant, JOHN HENRY, son of John and Jane McArthur, aged 1 year, 6 months and 22 days. The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral this (Saturday) afternoon, at 1 o'clock, from the residence of his parents, twenty-eighth street, below Columbia avenue. To proceed to Mount Moriah.
