In a 1918 letter for her widow pension she wrote, "In answer to your letter... inquiring as to the correct spelling of my Christian name, I would say that the claim was filed under the name of Lavina Kiehl. This is the way in which I spell my Christian name and I would like it to appear in that way." She then signed her name with an "x' mark.
In 1864 she married Lieutenant George B. Kiehl, late of the 172nd Regiment Pennsylvania Drafted Militia.
The 1899-1900 Ashland City Directory lists Mrs. Lavina Kiehl as a confectioner, 622 W. Centre St. She was working at her son George's bakery.
In 1900 she was listed as Dressmaker (census). In 1903 she went to Philadelphia to live with her children Jacob, Mary Ella and Lavina. Her daughter Annie remained in Ashland to care for her husband George.

Her grand-daughter Marion remembered how she taught her how to dust the spokes on the steps. She would tell her grandchildren to "say your prayers" at bedtime and was liked.
