Son of Thomas Hodges Allen and Nancy McKinnon, James was a farmer and writer. He wrote a weekly column for The Nacogdoches Weekly Sentinel (now the Daily Sentinel)for about 30 years. Jim and his wife, Martha Ann Tabiatha Phillips ("Annie") raised 9 of 10 children. The last child died with Annie in childbirth. He later married Sophronia Stone who helped him raise the last two children, Oree and Rachel.
